NEBBIOLO IN THE SUMMER – YES THAT’S RIGHT!

If you are like us, you just can’t get enough of Nebbiolo. Although it is fun to whip out the bubbles for the summer, an easy drinking Nebbiolo can actually be enjoyable even in the warmer months of the year!

Part of this reason is that especially Langhe Nebbiolos are being made in a simple, refreshing way with short skin contact times and aged in stainless steel. Here are some ideas on when to drink the Nebbiolos in the summer. Remember we mean serving them at a cooler temperature.

SUMMER NEBBIOLO PAIRINGS

GRILLED VEGETABLES

Since I am a vegetarian, I often drink Langhe Nebbiolo with grilled vegetables while the others eat their meat. Especially smoky and meatier veggies like portobello mushrooms and eggplants along with mushrooms can be great with a light elegant Langhe Nebbiolo like Gian Luca Colombo’s here.

BRUSCHETTA

Sautéed mushrooms and onions on bruschetta with a bit of rubbed garlic, or tomatoes and burrata. A higher acid Nebbiolo aged in stainless steel would be better to match the acidity of a bit tomato with something like Trediberri Langhe Nebbiolo here.

CHARCUTERIE AND CHEESE PLATTERS

I don’t know about you, but summer means socializing, aperitifs, and lots of grazing. Nebbiolo is a great red alternative for a charcuterie and cheese board. The tannins go well with the protein and the freshness cuts the fat of salami and cheese. I would recommend a medium bodied Nebbiolo slightly chilled like Chiara Boschis.

SUMMER BURGERS AND SKEWERS

Nebbiolo’s are great for the smoky earthy flavours and can hold up to the meat. A richer Nebbiolo in this case would be great but still served at quite a cool temperature. An idea could be a Nebbiolo with a bit of oak ageing like Ghiomo’s Nebbiolo d’Alba here.

HERB MARINATED CHICKEN OR ROASTED CHICKEN SANDWICH OR SALAD

A Nebbiolo with a more herbal profile from Monforte or Serralunga could be a great solution for any herbed dish with rosemary, thyme, or oregano. The aromatic complexity of Nebbiolo can go very well with herb marinades! Try something like Giovanni Porro from the cooler eastern slopes of Serralunga.

ANTIPASTO PLATTERS

Antipasto platters are a great way to entertain guests during the summer with marinated olives, roasted red peppers, cured meats and cheeses, herb crackers and roasted hazelnuts. To match the variety of food I would go with a softer Nebbiolo like Cascina delle Rose here.
